NEWS21 is a journalism initiative funded by the Carnegie and Knight Foundations intended to create a laboratory for the next generation of online journalism. I was a UC Berkeley NEWS21 fellow in 2008, where I focused on creating a website that told a complex story about challenges faced by the middle class, those struggling to enter it and those struggling to stay in it, and how those challenges affected the electorate.
Open to Solutions
Open to Solutions was a community reporting website about violence in Oakland developed in conjunction with the Oakland Tribune. I was on the team that designed and edited the site, which included interactive maps of crime statistics and community bloggers who presented the information in a solution-oriented context. I also worked on a multimedia feature story about violence crimes against the homeless population. Unforunately, the site is offline now, but screenshots will be coming soon.
Sabbath Keepers was my multimedia master’s project at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. I presented three comparative profiles of how adherents to different religions observe the Sabbath, and looked at how historical tension over Sabbath observance has mirrored struggles over the work ethic and religion in American life.
